The temperature dropped at the J/70 Midwinter Championship hosted by Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa, FL, but the winds stayed solid in the low-teens, allowing another three races on Saturday. One more is planned for Sunday to complete the eight-race Championship. Fernando Perez Ontiveros’ Black Mamba with Gonçalo Almeida, Bernardo Freitas and River Paquin posted a 1,4,9 on the day to leapfrog into first place with 26 net points (discarding a 12). Day one leader David Jannetti’s Very Odd slipped to second place on the heels of 4,12,21 on Saturday, giving them 31 net points. Brian Keane’s Savasana won the day with a 3,6,3, and his 36 net points moved him into the bronze position. In the 28-boat Corinthian Division, Francisco Van Avermaete’s Juicy maintained the lead among the amateur teams, and USA1516, led by Dave Kerr and Lee Sackett, stayed atop the seven-boat One-Pro group. Saturday’s race winners were Ontiveros’ Black Mamba, Kerr & Sackett’s USA1516 and John & Molly Baxter’s Team Vineyard Vines. Following racing on Friday and Saturday, sailors gathered at DIYC for debriefs with industry leaders and enjoyed complimentary beverages and snacks. Racing concludes Sunday for the 63 teams representing the United States, Argentina, Chile, Great Britain, Germany, Mexico and Sweden.
