The J/70 Corinthian US National Championship began Friday hosted by Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit, MI with 21 boats competing. Sean O’Brien’s McFly jumped out to the early advantage, including a bullet in Friday’s third and final race for 9 net points. Conditions on Lake Saint Clair saw warm summer temperatures and winds that began around 6 knots and improved to 10 knots throughout the day. Reigning Champions (from Cleveland, OH) Lee Sackett & Dave Kerr on USA1516 stand in the runner-up position with 10 points, ahead of David Jannetti’s Very Odd with 14 points. Jannetti’s Very Odd kicked off the Championship with a victory in a shifty race, chased by Sam Sansome’s Haddock and Thomas Ritter’s Tramp. The Lee Sackett/Kerr team on USA1516 followed with line honors in steadying breeze in race two, as O’Brien’s McFly and Tod Sackett’s FM got in on the action. O’Brien closed the day successfully, along with Mike Kirkman’s Hot Ticket and Brian Williams’ Afterberner. Racing continues through Sunday.
